The Dangers of Using Multi-Plug Adapters: A Cautionary Tale

Here’s why you should avoid using multi-plug adapters or square block adapters on sockets! This one had a kettle and a coffee maker plugged in—both high-wattage items that draw a lot of current.

The tenant noticed a ‘fishy burning’ smell, which turned out to be a melting socket. I replaced the damaged socket, tested the circuit, and advised the user to avoid using such adapters. Instead, plug high-wattage appliances like the kettle directly into the socket for safety.

Returning to Work: Second Fixing and Outdoor Lights Installation

Church Lighting and Consumer Unit Upgrade Amid COVID-19

Just before the COVID-19 lockdown, I started a project at a church, and with the building closed and me working alone, I was able to bring it to nearly complete and re-energized. A few finishing touches are still needed, but those can wait.

The project involved installing new lights in the meeting room, all wired in plastic conduit. Additionally, the church requested the consumer unit be moved, as it was originally installed at a height requiring a ladder for access—resulting in someone falling while resetting a breaker.

I relocated the unit to a safer height and installed a new 18th edition board with RCBOs and a surge protection device.

Consumer Unit Relocation for Improved Safety in Church Hall

Yesterday, I began the process of changing and relocating a consumer unit in a church hall. The original unit was installed unusually high, leading to safety concerns—two separate people had fallen off ladders while resetting an MCB.

To improve accessibility for the building’s users, the main feed to the consumer unit was extended, and the new unit has been installed in its new, safer location. Next up is installing trunking and extending the existing circuits to the new unit.

Upgrading to a 100W LED Flood Light with Dusk-to-Dawn Sensor

The old SON floodlight had failed, so it was time for an upgrade. We installed a new 100W LED floodlight with a dusk-to-dawn sensor. Much more efficient and reliable!

Fuse Board Upgrade for Safety Compliance

Time for a fuse board upgrade! These two fuse boards didn’t comply with the latest wiring regulations. Since they were located on a fire escape route and the only exit from the flat, they needed to be replaced with non-combustible metal fuse boards.

Additionally, there was no RCD protection on the sockets or lighting, so an upgrade was necessary.
